Drawing Kit

Before we begin drawing you'll need the following items in your kit:

  • Pencils - 2B and 4B drawing pencils

Drawing pencils are generally softer than standard stationary HB pencils. The higher the number the softer the lead and the darker the tone of the marks you are able to make.

  • Paper - Sketch book or pad

Most art shops will carry a variety of sketch/drawing pads and books. The paper will vary in terms of weight (gsm), quality and texture. While sketchbooks are handy for everyday drawing practice, quality paper that is acid-free and a more durable weight should be considered for drawings you'd like to frame or sell.

  • Kneadable eraser or standard pencil eraser

A quality eraser will ensure you make alterations to your work without damaging the paper. Kneadable erasers are used by artists working in both charcoal and pencil and can be used as a tool to both enhance the mark making or remove unwanted marks.

  • Pencil sharpener or craft blade

Some artists prefer to use a craft blade to sharpen their pencils. This can enhance shading if you use the side of a pencil as more of the graphite can be exposed through creating a longer tapered end.
